The owner of the Mercedes in which Princess Diana died are demanding the car wreckage be returned — so they can sell it for up to $2.2 million.

Paris-based Etoile Limousines are asking for the return of the black S280, which has been in the possession of London police since July 2005 as part of the inquest into the Diana’s death.

“It’s worth a great deal of money,” the Daily Mail reported company manager Jean-Francois Musa as saying.

“It’s completely illegal that police should have been able to take the car away from us without compensation.”

Diana was killed when the chauffeur-driven Mercedes crashed in a Paris road tunnel while being pursued by paparazzi photographers on August 31, 1997.

A British inquest concluded five months ago that the fatal smash was accidental.

The twisted remains of the car, which is still believed to bear the blood stains of the victims, could fetch more than $2 million despite having been cut in half for transportation back to London.

The luxury car cost around $150,000 new.

Mr Musa is reportedly interested in selling the car’s remains to Mohammed Al Fayed, whose son Dodi also died in the vehicle along with chauffeur Henri Paul.

But a spokeswoman for Al Fayed was reported by the Mail as saying: “It’s disgusting to think that someone wants to profit from the tragedy.

“Mr Al Fayed is not interested in pursuing this in any way.”

The majority of interest shown in the car is believed to be coming from the United States.

Scotland Yard has said the fate of the car is a decision that can only be made by French police.
