A Polish driver who was too sure of his GPS road navigation device ended up neck-deep in a lake after ignoring road signs warning of a dead-end ahead, Polish police said Friday.

“The man took a road that was closed a year ago when the area was flooded to make an artificial lake serving as a water reservoir — he ignored three road signs warning of a dead-end,” Piotr Smolen, police spokesman in Glubczyce, southern Poland, told AFP Friday. Read the rest of this entry »

Transport authorities in Brazil have caught up with a speed-loving Brazilian driver who clocked up nearly $2 million in fines, local media reported.

Police intercepted the driver of a 12-year-old car in Sao Paulo at the spot he most frequently committed infractions, the O Globo daily said Thursday.

For seven years he had been speeding and running red lights but was not arrested earlier because he never registered the car in his own name.

The paper said the car, worth around $6,500, would be auctioned if the driver, unnamed, did not pay the $1.8 million in fines in 90 days.

A pickup truck thief lost his purloined Chevy Silverado to an armed carjacker during a 7-Eleven stop. Police Cmdr. Kelly McMillin said “you couldn’t make up something stranger than this.”

A 33-year-old man told police he stole the pickup Saturday then, while sitting outside a convenience store, a man with a gun hopped in and ordered him to start driving.

The pickup ran out of gas and the gunman ordered him to get out and push, but the man managed to run away and call police.

Police spotted the pickup on Sunday and the gunman was arrested after a brief chase and crash.

Birdwatchers at Gibraltar Point looked on in astonishment as Necdet Bakimci tried to steer his 32-tonne lorry down a narrow lane towards the North Sea.

But he became stuck and spent around an hour attempting to turn back in the direction of dry land.

When questioned by onlookers, he explained in broken English that he was looking for Coral Road on Gibraltar.

It is thought that the confusion arose because his device had the Rock listed as UK territory and so directed him towards the mainland.

Steven Humphreys, 57, of Burgh le Marsh, Lincs, said he explained to Mr Bakimci that Gibraltar was in fact 1,600 miles away off the Spanish coast.

“He showed me his delivery docket,” he said. “I had my laptop and found the place on Gibraltar. Amazingly, the guy didn’t seem too upset.”

Eventually, Mr Bakimci arranged for his firm in Antakya, Turkey, to ship the cars to the correct destination from Birmingham and began his journey home.
